Our Current Economy
The SWLA Alliance has recently begun working with Buxton to use GPS tracking to trace ongoing recent developments in the local economy. Using data on visitation patterns to establishments in different industries, the Alliance can analyze economic activity in almost real-time.
The need for this tool comes at a crucial moment as we need to not only look back at what occurred, but where we are headed as we come out of the economic shutdown that occurred across the country.
The Alliance will be able to trace industry activity for all five parishes. For example, the graphs below show trends in grocery store and gasoline station visitation for each parish. The green line illustrates a measure of visits to grocery stores in 2020 while the orange line shows visits in 2019 for the same period. Around March 13 and after the Governor’s stay-at-home order on March 22, we can see most parishes have much higher visits to grocery stores compared to the same time last year. As more people were staying at home, the visits to gasoline stations fell dramatically compared to the previous year in most parishes.
